Is your skin Summer ready?

When summertime rolls around people are ready to shed some layers and show some skin. Here are some tips to get yourself summer ready with radiant skin.

Moisturize

Moisturizer is key for healthy skin. The purpose of moisturizer is to add an extra layer to your skin to help keep moisture inside. It keeps your skin hydrated while also improving its look and feel. Find a moisturizer that is compatible with your skin type (dry, oily, combination, acne) and get into the habit of putting it on daily. Your skin will thank you!

SPF Is Your BFF

I cannot stress this enough!! You need to protect your skin from the sun. Always wear an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15 or more whenever leaving the house. There are many different ways to get protection from the sun other than greasy sunscreen . A lot of moisturizers and even foundations include SPF.  Some of my favorites are Maybelline Fit Me! Foundation and Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer. Keep applying every couple hours if you go in the water or sweat at all. Remember, you can still get a nice tan while protecting your skin!

A common misconception is that SPF just means sunscreens and lotions, but it also means clothing and materials to shield your skin from the sun. One part of the body we always forget about is our scalp, so throw on a cute hat before you hit the beach.

Exfoliate Your Way to Smooth Skin

When you exfoliate you are removing tens of thousands of dead cells from the top layer of your skin. This helps to keep your skin clear and prevent acne. Exfoliation also helps to improve how your skin feels. Either pick one up from the drug store or use a DIY formula. My favorite and easy DIY exfoliator I frequently is sugar and olive oil.  Combine 1/2 cup white granulated sugar with 3 tablespoons olive oil. Use a washcloth and gently scrub in upward circular motions. After you rinse off your skin, apply moisturizer to lock in hydration.  If you exfoliate twice a week your skin will be smooth in no time.

Water, Water, Water!

Dull skin?  You’re probably dehydrated! Skipping out on water can cause skin too look dry, cracked and eeek..wrinkled! Water has endless health benefits and drinking it is the simplest thing you can do for your body. Want glowing skin? 60-100 ounces a day will surely do the trick.

Fake, Don’t Bake

Everyone loves to be tan. However, with skin cancer rates higher than ever, it’s a trend that kills!  I’ll be the first to admit that in college I was a tan-a-holic. With multiple tanning salons within walking distance of my school (all with college discounts)  I went tanning 4 to 5 times a week! I look back at pictures of myself now and think I look ridiculous. But I think my biggest scare was when my mom had basal cell skin cancer removed from her hairline this spring.  She had almost 2 inches of skin removed and over 17 stitches inside her scalp… I haven’t gone tanning since.  Definitely not something I want to ever go through.

There are SO many alternatives to tanning beds. Sunless tanning is the only way to get that bronze glow without subjecting your skin to damaging rays. Spray tanning is intimidating at first because no one wants to turn orange or too dark( cue that episode of Friends when Ross royally screws it up).  As long as you follow directions, go to a well-known salon, and exfoliate 2 hours before you go you won’t have any problems. My favorite professional  booth spray tan is Versa Spa. Check out their website to find a location that offers their product near you! My favorite at home tanners are Body Drench Instant Bronzing Spray or for a more gradual tan Jergens Natural Glow Revitalizing Daily Moisturizer.
