Why the Whole “No White After Labor Day” Rule is Completely Out of Date.
I’m sure many of you have heard the ancient rule that insists wearing white after Labor Day is a major fashion faux pas. Fear not, I’ve got insider tips to help you work it in white this winter.
I’m currently enrolled in the Fashion Industry Essentials Program created by Parson’s School of Design and Teen Vogue. Right now I am taking a course called “Unlocking Visual Style”, which discusses fashion as a visual medium.
One of the lessons discussed the history behind white clothing and how to style it. I learned that “sacred” rules of not wearing white after September, or to prom were being seriously challenged by fashionistas all over the world. (FYI I wore a white dress to my Senior Prom). White is a wardrobe staple, no matter what the season.
Wear a Dark Accent Color
Pairing white with a dark accent colors such as grey, navy and black grabs attention while still remaining stylish and chic. I’m a huge fan of black and white outfits because they showcase a timeless color combination that never goes out of style.Using an accent color makes the white garment stand out as the central focal point of the outfit .
In my outfit you can see my leggings, boots, sunglasses and bold lip were all dark colors, compared to my bright white sweater. The first piece of clothing that draws your attention is the sweater because it is a contrast to the dark accessory items.
Layers on Layers
Don’t be afraid to layer on the white this winter. I recently found a white faux fur vest that I work into my outfits as a top layer. If your style is a little less bold, mix in white as an accessory (like a scarf) or wear it under a jacket. A white blouse looks beautiful under a cardigan or for night time, with a leather jacket.
Below I’ve given you a breakdown of my look from clothes to accessories and makeup.
